Metals are intrinsic to the design.
Every Pallas Fogg piece begins with consideration as to how an object should look, feel and age. I have formulated and create with proprietary precious metal master alloys, using Palladium and Indium in place of the traditional Zinc, Nickel and Copper commonly found in commercial alloys. The result is a deliberately simplified material palette chosen for its color, durability, work-ability, and long-term character.
“AgPd” alloy combines Silver, Palladium, and Indium to create a distinctive precious-metal alloy with a naturally cool, grey-white color when matte or satin finished. Highly polished, it takes on a lustrous shine. Palladium contributes hardness, durability, and resistance to tarnishing, while Indium helps modify the alloy's working and finishing characteristics without introducing Zinc. The resulting material is intended to remain bright and clean through years of wear, rather than depending upon Rhodium-plating to maintain its appearance.
18K Green Gold follows a similar philosophy, combining Gold, Silver, Copper, and Indium to create a naturally colored Green-Gold alloy free of Zinc. The color is subtle rather than theatrical—a muted, Green-Yellow Electrum. At 18 Karat, the alloy contains 75% pure Gold, giving it the intrinsic richness and durability expected of fine Gold while allowing the alloying metals to become an intentional part of its visual identity.
Palladium and Indium are chosen as functional materials, not merely additives. I avoid Zinc where possible because I prefer to control the composition of my alloys deliberately, rather than relying upon conventional jewelry formulations designed primarily for mass production. The resulting master alloys are Nickel-free and Zinc-free, with a low-reactivity risk for sensitive skin. Their natural resistance to tarnishing and corrosion also means that the surface character of the metal is allowed to remain part of the object, rather than being concealed beneath plating.
These alloys are not simply substitutes for conventional precious metal alloys. They are materials developed as part of the design process itself. Their color, hardness, response to fabrication, ability to take a high polish, and behavior over time all influence the objects I create with them.
